Presenting the newly released and updated Rolex Air-King 126900.
Don’t let the "Air-King" name confuse you — this isn’t a pilot’s watch in modern form (despite the historical relationship between the Air-King models and their applications in the aviation field). In fact, the dial of the modern Air-King is inspired by a car — the world’s fastest car, the Bloodhound SSR.
The original Air-King in its current format was introduced in 2016 at Baselworld to mixed reviews. The origins of the Air-King are actually in a supersonic car designed and intended to break the land speed record — the Bloodhound SSC. The “car” is basically a jet with wheels, and its ultimate mission was to break 1,000 MPH. Rolex supplied two automatic timepieces to be built into the dash of the car, one a chronograph and one a speedometer, at pilot Andy Green’s request. Both instruments were intended to serve as a backup in case of electronic instrument failures. The Air-King derives its design cues from these two instruments, blending the world of racing and aviation in an interesting way.
The new 2022 release features some unexpected updates like the luminous 3-6-9 on the dial, a thinner bracelet, and a subtle update to the "5" to introduce more symmetry. The case also appears beefier, and boasts crown-guards with a meatier crown making the watch much easier to handle.
